6/30/1979R. D. Singh became the director of Central Bureau of Investigation. He was there in this office till 24 Jan. 1980.
8/15/1947On the the stroke of mid-night on 14th August 1947, India became independent and was partitioned. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first president of free India. The mixed economy policy was taken on a five-year plan basis for economic development. On 26th January 1950, India became a democratic and is the biggest democracy of the world today. In 1956, on the basis of languages, India was divided into 14 states and 6 union territories. Today, there are 27 states and 7 union territories.
2/1/1797Lord Cornwallis was sworn in as Governor General of India for a second time in England. However, he did not proceed to India till 1805.

9/8/1995Harcharan Singh Brar sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab.
5/20/1932Bipinchandra Ramchandra Pal, powerful journalist and revolutionary freedom fighter, passed away. He was amongst the trio which was known as ""Lal - Bal - Pal"" during the freedom struggle. He started a newspaper called ""Swaraj"" for the Indians in England. He also edited several other newspapers like ""Tribune"", ""New India"", ""Vande Mataram"", ""Swaraj"", ""Hindu Review"", ""Democrat"", ""Independent Bengali"", etc.
9/29/1996Water from Krishna river (AP) released for Madras.
2/20/2000Supreme Court stays the Karnataka High Court's order quashing charges framed against the former Chief Minister, Mr. S. Bangarappa, and directs the trial court to proceed in the corruption case.
