10/11/1923Harish Chandra was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His work in a narrow branch of modern mathematics led to its developement to such an extent that it drew the attention of mathematicians all over the world.
6/7/1631Begum Mumtaj Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan, Emperor of India, passed away at Burhanpur a few hours after the birth of a daughter. She was married in 1612 and the Taj Mahal was built for her.
4/2/1954Nehru calls for a halt to the build up of nuclear weapons.
4/26/1858Kunwar Singh, revolutionary of Indian mutiny and freedom fighter, passed away. He fought his last battle near Jagdishpur, Bihar on April 23, 1858 and defeated the Britishers but was deeply wounded. He also organised the national rebels.
7/29/1979Choudhary Charan Singh was sworn in as the fifth Prime Minister of India heading the Janata (S)-Congress coalition. He held this office till January 14, 1980. Jagjivan Ram became the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
11/1/1967Old Punjab, after first partition in 1947, was again seperated into two new states of Punjab and Haryana on linguistic basis, and Chandigarh became a Union Territory.
