1/19/1966Indira Gandhi elected leader of the Congress party to succeed the late Lal Bahadur Shastri as the third Prime Minister of India. She pledged to follow path of Non-Alignment in worlds affairs.
1/19/1966The Sultan, losing his hold over the army and some members of his aristocracy, very wisely abdicated in favour of his brother Ahmad, who is famous in Deccan history as Ahmad Shah Wali.
8/6/1905Chittaranjan Das ""Desh Bandhu"", freedom fighter and advocate, started an organisation named ""Swadeshi Mandali"". He also founded magazine named Narayana in 1914 and a Bengali weekly in 1922 and the daily 'Forward'.

3/23/1931Bhagat Singh, Shivram Rajguru and Sukhdev, great freedom fighters and revolutionaries, were hanged for assasination of Saunders, Assistant Superintendent of Police in the Central Jail at Lahore. Bhagat Singh and his associates showed no signs of any fear as they kissed the noose, chanting ""Inquilab Zindabad"" (long live the revolution).
