8/16/1946Hindus and Muslims riot in Calcutta. 90 people lost their lives and other 900 were hurt. The Muslim League observed a ""Direct Action Day"" and announced its withdrawal of support from all plans.
1/24/1966Indira Gandhi becomes Prime Minister of India. She continued in this office till March 24, 1977, after winning the General Elections. She became the only second woman in modern history to head a government.
10/2/1982Chintaman Dwarkanath Deshmukh, former Finance minister of India, died.
9/1/1998Leaded petrol is banned in Delhi.
12/30/1993Government gets majority when 10 members of Ajit faction of the JD merge with the Congress.
9/25/1999Eighth SAF Games inaugurated in Kathmandu.
1/17/1905Dattaraya Ramchandra Kaprekar was born at Dahanu near Bombay. He discovered the shortest possible routes to solve mathematical problems. In 1927, he won the wrangler R. P. Paranjpe Mathematical Prize for an Original Piece of work in mathematics. He discovered 'Kaprekar Constant' in 1946. It is the number ""6174"". The constant 6174 is arrived at and this number then generates itself into one set of numbers called ""self numbers"" that is also known by his name. Kaprekar passed away in 1988.
8/30/1908Ganpatrao Tapase, senior freedom fighter and former Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, was born.
2/23/1980Prakash Padukone becomes the first Indian to win All-England Badminton Championship.
