Gulzari Lal Nanda, Gandhian freedom fighter and twice acting Prime Minister in 1964 and 1966, died in Ahmedabad at the age of 100 years.

8/15/1947India gains independence from the British rule and Pakistan emerges as a separate Islamic nation. Around 600,000 die in clashes during the subsequent population exchange of 14 million people between the two new countries.
8/16/1946Hindus and Muslims riot in Calcutta. 90 people lost their lives and other 900 were hurt. The Muslim League observed a ""Direct Action Day"" and announced its withdrawal of support from all plans.
1/26/1965Hindi Language is accepted as National language of India.
2/14/1881Rajendra Lal Dutta and M.M.Basu established the first Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta.
